You may know legal trailblazers such as Thaddeus Sory Esq. and Richmond Korley Esq., but let me introduce you to their master, Hon. Ambrose Dery Esq.
A man who moved from the courtroom to Parliament, from Cabinet to statesman, Hon. Ambrose Dery stands as a seasoned lawyer and a devoted servant of the Republic.
His contributions to the 4th Republic is firmly woven into Ghana’s legal and democratic journey.
Hon. Ambrose Dery is a distinguished legal practitioner whose life’s work reflects an enduring commitment to the law, public service, and national development.
His academic journey began at Navrongo Secondary School, and in 1977 he entered the prestigious University of Ghana, where he pursued legal studies with uncommon diligence and graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B ).
He was subsequently called to the Ghana Bar in 1982, marking 43 years of illustrious legal practice. During this period, he established Dery & Co., a law firm that has been in existence for over 20 years. Through this firm, he trained seasoned lawyers such as Richmond Korley Esq., and Thaddeus Sory Esq., whose legal careers are undoubtedly worth emulating.
Together with his able team, he has conducted several high-profile cases. One particularly instructive and widely admired case among law students is Abedi Pele v. International Commercial Bank (ICB).
Indeed, from the Upper West Region emerged a lawyer whose career would span private practice, ministerial responsibility, and parliamentary leadership. His competence at the Bar earned him national recognition, and in 2003 he was appointed Deputy Attorney-General of the Republic, a role in which he contributed meaningfully to the administration of justice.
His call to further national duty followed swiftly. Between 2004 and 2006, he served as Regional Minister for the Upper West Region. From 2005 to 2007, he also held office as Minister of State at the Ministry of Justice. Hon. Ambrose Dery’s service extended into parliamentary leadership. In 2008, he was elected Member of Parliament for the then Lawra–Nandom Constituency (now Nandom), where he represented his people with dedication and conviction.
During his tenure, he facilitated the training of many constituents into the security services and spearheaded rapid development across the Nandom constituency. Give him his roses while he lives.
Within Parliament, he rose to become Deputy Minority Leader of the 5th Parliament of the Fourth Republic.
Though he lost his parliamentary seat in the 2012 general elections, his contributions to legislative governance remain indelible.
Beyond partisan politics, Hon. Ambrose Dery has consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to social development and community empowerment.
According to reports by the Upper West Media, he has personally funded the drilling of 159 boreholes, in addition to over 100 boreholes drilled through the support of the Municipal Assembly.
From 1993 to 2003, he served as Chairman of the WaterAid Partner Round Table, coordinating and supporting local NGOs funded by WaterAid in their mission to improve access to water and sanitation across communities in Ghana.
In recognition of his experience and steady hand in governance, Hon. Ambrose Dery was once again appointed Minister for the Interior in 2017. He was later reassigned as a Minister of State in the Presidency in 2024. The entire family of Legal Academy says your achievements are inspiring. We pray that may the Lord grant you good health and long life.
